CEV Beach Volley Nations Cup Finals – men
France’s national beach volleyball pairs have been coached by a fully staffed coaching team, headed by Brazilian specialist Lissandro Carvalho. Their FIVB Volleyball Empowerment coach support funding totals CHF 795,000 so far.
In addition to automatically qualifying one team per gender as Olympic Games hosts, France managed to secure a second women’s spot through the Olympic Ranking, earned by Lezana Placette & Alexia Richard.
To host the tournament under the Eiffel Tower with a full set of two women’s and two men’s duos, France also needed to win the men’s CEV Beach Volley Nations Cup Finals in Jurmala, and they did. Represented by Teo Rotar, Arnaud Gauthier-Rat, Remi Bassereau and Julien Lyneel at the event in Latvia, France cruised through the country-vs-country tournament winning all five of their ties.
In Pool B, they beat both Germany and Lithuania by 2-0 each in rubbers won, successfully persevering through four three-set matches. In the quarter-finals, France defeated Belgium. After yet another tie-breaker victory, 2-1 (21-17, 17-21, 15-12) in favour of Bassereau & Lyneel against Daan Hendrikx & Kyan Vercauteren, the first straight-set win finally arrived, with Rotar & Gauthier-Rat (pictured in the main photo; credits: cev.eu) producing a 2-0 (21-15, 21-18) sweep of their rubber against Louis Vandecaveye & Gilles Vandecaveye.
A similar plot unfolded in France’s semi-final against Portugal on Sunday. Bassereau & Lyneel started the tie with a 2-1 (21-23, 26-24, 15-8) win over Goncalo Sousa & Tomas Sousa, and Rotar & Gauthier-Rat followed up with a 2-0 (21-18, 21-13) victory over Joao Pedrosa & Hugo Campos.
The final, however, was a different story. France had to face Austria, another team benefitting from FIVB Volleyball Empowerment support. The showdown started with Timo Hammarberg & Moritz Pristauz’s 2-1 (28-30, 21-17, 15-11) turnaround against Bassereau & Lyneel, France’s first match lost at the tournament. Rotar & Gauthier-Rat, however, reacted with a 2-1 (21-19, 19-21, 15-12) win over Christoph Dressler & Philipp Waller to level the tie and push it to a golden set, which they won 15-10.
